This site,, presents another side of the story of colonial rule in the British West Indies.

Conventional histories of British settlement in the region portray activity premised either on infliction of pain or else, on suffering.

The view offered here is of work, for four centuries to reduce pain - initiatives that went beyond familiar histories of medicine, hospitals or nursing. Such effort took shape in a pattern of schooling designed to preserve and improve health.

This website celebrates the continuing sequel to that effort.
