About the teacher

Horace Scobie

I was born in Trinidad, in the former British West Indies, far removed from the Mossi people of Burkina Faso, my ancestors in West Africa. My name, Horace, reflects the Latin, Christian setting dominant in Trinidad and Tobago.
My last name, Scobie, comes from an ancestor who migrated from Perthshire, Central Scotland to live in Tobago. This island, site of the first English adventure novel – The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe – is where I spent my earliest years.
As a West Indian, I am the result of extended European “adventure” in Africa and the Caribbean. Not only in name, but in language, by education, religion and nationality I am a child of empire, born British and keen to record that cosmopolitan experience.
